LEONARD H. TYLER was named the 13th president of Maine Maritime Academy on March 21, 1995, having joined the college as a faculty member and coach nearly three decades earlier. Over the years, he has served the Academy in a variety of roles, including dean of admissions, director of conferences and institutes, director of the Center for Advanced Maritime Studies and vice president for external affairs.
As president, his administration has been highlighted by the acquisition of a state-of-the-art training ship, by record enrollment, and by the launching of a $22 million capital campaign, the most extensive ever conducted by a maritime college.
Mr. Tyler completed sabbatical internships with Keystone Shipping Co., Trinidad Shipping, and the American Institute of Shipping. He also interned with the U.S. Maritime Administration and with the Committee on Merchant Marine and Fisheries, U.S. House of Representatives. He is a former president of the Downeast College Consortium, a member of the Board of Directors of the American Bureau of Shipping, and a founder, and former chairman of the International Association of Maritime Universities. He is an incorporator of the Bangor Savings Bank in Bangor, Maine; and a former trustee of Memorial Hospital in Blue Hill, Maine.
In 2002, Mr. Tyler was inducted into the Ithaca College Hall of Fame, in recognition of having excelled in intercollegiate athletics and in his chosen career as an educator.
